Glyphosate and 2,4-D What You Should Know

When I started reading reports connecting something called Glyphosate to Parkinson’s I knew this article would be written. I watched my dad struggle and pass away from this disease earlier in the year, so I felt strong enough recently to be open to information linking new theories to this disease. I have to say after researching both Glyphosate and 2,4-D, I’m shocked. And to be honest, I’m scared. But I think we have enough of a community here with knowledge on pesticides and food system concerns to get through this. Are you ready?

Should we start at the beginning? Let’s do a quick review of GMOs and how this scary word glyphosate relates to both genetically modified food and conventional food.

GMO is food grown from genetically modified seed. The company that created them is called Monstanto. They created seeds that can withstand being sprayed with chemicals called Roundup to save farmers time with pulling weeds by hand. Basically the weeds would die, but the plant would remain intact which was celebrated news to farmers because they spend a lot of time weeding.

Fast forward a few years and those weeds are becoming resistant to the Roundup. So now farmers have to use a lot more Roundup to try and kill the weeds. The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate. Later in the article you’ll hear what diseases are linked to glyphosate and why it should be avoided, but when crops started to become resistant, Roundup switched to a stronger chemical called 2,4-D, which Health Canada approved in 2012. If the name 2,4-D sounds familiar, it’s because this was an ingredient in Agent Orange used in the Vietnam War.

I recently learned that Canada is 5th in the world as a top producer of GMO crops. The US is number one. 2,4-D is the second most used herbicide in the Canada Prairie agriculture after glyphosate. I had no idea Soy, Corn, and Canola were such large industries in Canada but all it takes is turning over a packaged food item to check out the ingredients to see that corn and soy fillers are used in most processed food that is not organic.

One large area of mis-information with GMOs is wheat. And I think I know why. Farmers use Roundup to grow wheat. This doesn’t mean that wheat is grown from GMO seeds, but it does mean that the wheat is treated with either glyphosate or 2,4-D before it’s harvested. If you are an advocate for clean food, this would mean the wheat is now chemical food and really makes you wonder if glyphosate is more of a problem than gluten. I’m sure that farmers growing food both locally and imported – widely use Roundup on crops even though that food is not grown from GMO seed (or called Roundup ready crop). And if the Roundup contains the chemical 2,4-D we are talking about a chemical that was used in a war that had devastating effects on agriculture, people and animals. This chemical is routinely used in pre-sowing and pre-harvest application of crops to control insects, weeds, and plant disease. And again, the crops don’t have to be GMO in order to be treated with Roundup pesticide.

And being really new to the topic of glyphosate, I needed a source to start at the beginning. And I found that with Tony Mitra and a recent podcast he taped with Stephanie Seneff who is a senior research scientist. She is controversial for her studies linking connections between glyphosate and a host of disorders but what I liked about this podcast was both Tony and Stephanie are easy to understand. The interview is scary, but not overly scientific and I recommend it for someone wanting the basics on pesticides if they are already uncomfortable with the idea of food containing chemicals. Here are some basic points from the podcast (you will quickly find how controversial Stephanie’s studies are, but the links between glyphosate and autism in particular are hard to ignore):

– glyphosate disrupts gut bateria. This active ingredient in Roundup starts a consequence of disruptions in our bodies that starts with gut bacteria.

– in 1970, 1 in 10,0000 kids were diagnosed with autism. By next year, she predicts that 1 in 30 boys will be diagnosed. She believes the direct connection are roundup ready soy and corn crops.

– the direct correlation between the amount of Roundup used on food and the rise in Autism can be connected.

– glyphosate creates an imbalance in the gut which leads to leaky gut.

– your body is dependent on enzymes and minerals that are important to the body as they are reactive.

– glyphosate is partially responsible for kids getting violent reactions from vaccines. She believes it isn’t the mercury and aluminium in vaccines alone causing reactions such as autism. She believes that it’s the glyphosate in a child’s body that triggers a much more toxic reaction from the aluminium in vaccines.

– gut bacteria is unique for every person and therefore how a body reacts to glyphosate is different.

– Roundup can be linked to global declines in starfish, monarch butterflies, ladybugs, bees and colony collapses, and bats.

– the next of the Monsanto chemicals to enter our food system will be 2,4-D which was an ingredient in Agent Orange.

– as the level of 2,4-D increases, so will the number and frequency of diseases. It’s a chemical treadmill.

– her end of interview advice for people concerned about Roundup? Eat organic food as if your life depends on it.

So biggest learning point of this research for me personally? Learning that Roundup is connected with GMO crops but can also be spayed and used on crops that aren’t GMO (grown with genetically altered seed). So until now, I have not been worried about wheat or cane sugar because they are not GMOs, but that is wrong because huge amounts of Roundup is used to treat these crops before it’s harvested. Organic – it’s the only way to beat this. The Canadian and US Governments have and will continue to fail it’s citizens with how ruined our food system has become. The only way to save it is through consumer pressure to grow food with organic farming standards.

My thanks to Dr. Thierry Vrain, Dr. Shiv Chopra, and Tony Mitra who have toured and spoken out against the impact of GE foods. From the first time I’ve listed to Dr. Vrain speak until now, I feel like I’ve learned so much but I know I have a long way to go. It’s a scary journey and these men will be the first to tell you that. As a mom that is trying to protect herself and family from the diseases knocking on doors around us, I feel like this is my journey to learn so I can try to teach and protect the people I care about. This stuff has never sounded far fetched to me, rather the opposite. The connections to disease and the timelines surrounding the spikes when Monsanto was allowed to take over our food system fit. They can’t be ignored, we all just need to plug into it, like no generation has ever done before. Which is scary and seems like a lot of work at first. But what alternative do we have?

Genetically Modified Tampons?

There have been very few things in my journey that I’ve recommended to ditch immediately after researching. I normally say save the cleaners, personal care products, processed food, etc. because you’ll always be in a pinch and can take the opportunity to use them up. The one product I would say dispose of right away are traditional tampons. A few days ago, I turned into a sleuth at a local store and snapped a photo of the materials listed on the back of a tampon box. Why? I really thought the materials listed would have changed since I first researched tampons 4 years ago. When I first wrote this article, I was horrified to find out polyester was an ingredient in tampons. I was just starting to remove materials like polyester from being close to my family because one daughter has eczema and natural fibers were less irritating for her skin. The other part of researching polyester was finding out that flame retardant properties are naturally occurring in this material. So if this is true, I still have to ask tampon manufacturers where polyester is used in the make-up of a tampon and why this petroleum based plastic is doing in a menstrual product? Researching the exact materials and chemical components of tampons is difficult because this information is kept proprietary. Unlike personal care products, makeup, etc. tampons adhere to a different criteria of labeling because they are a medical device. Kind of the same thing as sex toys labelled as gag gifts so you don’t need to discover that plastic dildos are made from PVC – the most toxic form of plastic on the market. It’s beyond disgusting and because these products are used in such an intimate part of the body that is highly porous, absorbent and toxins thrive in tissue.

With spending so much of my life thinking about genetically modified food and how to avoid it, I had another really scary thought about traditional tampons. How do we know if they are made from genetically modified cotton – otherwise known as BT cotton? This form of cotton is grown from GM seed and grows resistance to antibiotics. It adds a whole new layer to the cotton industry and for woman that use non-organic tampons. Even conventional cotton is grown using heavy pesticides and we know toxins released into our body from pesticides like to live in fat cells.

The only positive difference I can find 4 years later with tampons is the industry changed their bleaching standards for the rayon (wood pulp) that is mixed with cotton for absorbancy. But the fact is trace amounts of dioxin can still exist from whitening and the heavy processing that occurs to make wood pulp a soft and fluffy form of rayon.  So here we have the 3 active materials used in a tampon: polyester, cotton, and rayon. Nothing but pesticides, petroleum, chemicals, and possibly trace amounts of dioxin or flame retardants. We give our teenagers these products to use because they are straight forward, inexpensive, disposable, and easy for them to manage. We need to think about teenage girls and their long term health. Could tampon use over a 20 year period contribute to infertility problems, inflammatory disease and Endometriosis?

Since writing that first article about tampons four years ago, I really only made one permanent change to my routine. No tampons. If I have to go swimming in the summer with the kids, I buy organic cotton tampons. I always meant to try a Mooncup or Diva Cup but I’m not a huge fan of silicone. For the most part I use reusable pads (Lunapads) and disposable pads for heavy days.

I encourage you to tell 3 people that might still be using traditional tampons. I think teenagers and young adults are the highest users. What are GMOs?

To truly understand what it means to eat healthier – you need to learn what GMOs are. If you’ve heard the terms: genetically modified food (GMO), Monsanto, or Prop 37 and haven’t been fully able to understand what these terms mean I hope this article will help. GMOs are a worldwide problem and just like the household world of toxins with plastics, flame retardants, phthalates, formaldehyde, etc., understanding there are major problems within our food source is actually pretty scary. Opening our eyes to how widespread the problem of GMOs has become, especially in North America is important. Let’s start at the beginning to understand why GMO, Monsanto, and Prop 37 are all terms to discover on your journey to better health.

What is Monsanto?

Monsanto is a company that has been a chemical giant since it started in 1901 – which immediately leads to the question “what are they doing in the food industry?!” The creation of toxic products that have lead to major pollution & health problems were created by Monsanto in the earlier 1900s: Agent Orange & PCBs. These and other chemicals kept Monsanto busy for the first 50 years of the company but after PCBs became banned in the late 70s, Monsanto shifted it’s focus and wanted to become known as an agricultural company. By 1980 Monsanto had become focused on producing Roundup which is a weed killer or herbicide. The marketing when Roundup first came onto the market declared it was biodegradable and good for the earth. The promise of using Roundup was to be a convenience for farmers to save time weeding. The wording of ‘biodegradable’ has since changed on Roundup bottles because it’s not.  In order to grow food that could withstand the effects of spraying crops with Roundup, Monsanto created genetically modified seeds for soy, corn, sugarbeets, cotton, rapeseed (canola), potatoes, and more, so that the plants would grow, even though Roundup was being sprayed. They actually changed the DNA of the seed and this is when biotechnology was introduced to our food.

So to summarize: Monsanto is the company that created weed killer called Roundup to act as a time saver for farmers….then created a seed that could withstand the effects of Roundup. All of this was passed, approved, with very little testing by the US government. This takes us to understand what GMOs are – genetically modified organisms in the form of seeds.

What are GMOs?

First Roundup ready soy beans (GM or genetically modified soy beans) were approved in the US in 1996. We learn that in the early 90s GMOs were approved by the US government as more of a political decision rather than science which is what makes them so controversial. It’s another example of a product brought onto the market that wasn’t fully tested to prove that it’s safe before entering our homes, bodies, and food chain. Roundup ready soy beans account for 95% of soy beans grown in the US. Between 1995-2005, Monsanto purchased 50 seed companies throughout the world. This massive purchase has led to many foods being born from GMO seeds – view a more complete list here. Some of these foods include: corn, cotton, wheat, soy, potatoes, tomatoes, rice, sugarcane, canola, honey, peas, papaya, squash, sugarbeets, chicory, and sweet corn. At first thought you might think that avoiding GMO ingredients or products is easy but cruise the interior lanes of a supermarket, look at labels and try to find food that doesn’t contain canola.

The future problems of modified food or genetically altered seeds is contamination. Even in countries where GMOs are banned, you have genetically modified seeds appearing. This has happened in Mexico with their corn – which is a problem since it’s one of the largest corn producers. So let’s think about this fact – and it’s one of the scariest facts about how widespread we’ve allowed a company built on creating toxic chemicals has become. Cross contamination is evident and a problem with GMO and conventional food. If there are farmers on the same street, one producing GMO food and the other producing conventional and there is a high wind or a bird carries over a seed into the conventional farmer’s field you now have a contamination issue.

What is Prop 37?

This November 2012, Californian voters will decide if GMO foods should be labelled in California. Proposition 37 requires companies to add wording to their labels if their food had been genetically modified and this is a huge step in the fight against GMOs. It is not a ban of GMOs but a lot of guess work regarding food will be removed for consumers. As a Canadian I think Prop 37 is so important because I think the rest of the US and Canada will follow. 50 other countries already have labels on their food for GMOs – why is North America always so far behind?! If you have friends in California make sure they know about their ability to vote on Prop 37 in a few months!

How to Avoid GMOs?

Buying labelled certified organic food is one way to avoid GMOs. Foods that are labelled ‘organic’ or ‘made from organic ingredients’ cannot contain any GMO ingredients. Foods on my personal shopping list radar are those containing soy, corn, beet sugar, artificial sugars and canola oil which has led to an immediate ban of cereals in my house. Want to see a scary GMO list? Check out the ingredients of Cheerios – yes that first food we give babies (and I feed my kids)…it’s GMO city. Here is a long list of genetically modified food. I think the number of baby formula companies & brands on this list is sick. I would assume the health effect of GMO food would be larger in a babies tiny system…no?

Missing from the below image is ‘growing your own food’. It should be there, but with so many families dependent on buying food, I think the most important action you can take from this article is support local and get to know your local farmers! I’ve spend the summer doing this with my family and the gratitude you feel towards a person that is creating safe, healthy food cannot be measured. Ask questions and find trusted food sources. Farmers markets, organic food stores, and local stores that carry locally produced food is the way to beat GMOs.
