While researching my article for children’s sunscreen, I came across a 1-page guide that all parents should print and carry in their shopping bag/purse. It’s from the Environmental Working Group’s cosmetic database and it is something all parents should read. It lists ingredients to avoid within children’s personal care products and lists better brands (picks) for each of these categories:

Shampoo and Conditioner
Body Wash and Liquid Soap
Toothpaste
Sunscreen
Baby Wipes

Now your cat, rabbit, ferret, or hamster can GO GREEN!  Purina has found a way for your pet to reduce their Eco footprint.  The product is called ‘Yesterday’s News’ and these litter box pellets are made from recycled newspaper and are non-toxic, biodegradable, and no raw materials were harvested to produce it.

In April we brought our pet rabbit home from the store with Yesterday’s News for it’s litter box.  It works much better than wood chips for odor absorption and is way easier to clean-up.  It hasn’t been easy to find, but it is a great product.  Our rabbit was also better with his litter box training when Yesterday’s News was in the litter box.  And to answer the question on your mind….no, we haven’t managed to litter box train the bunny yet - but I’m trying!

Here is more information from the Purina site: “Low-tracking Yesterday’s News® provides a sensible alternative to clay litter that helps you maintain a hygienic, healthy home. It is highly recommended by veterinarians because it is a safe, clean, low tracking, and environmentally friendly solution.”

I received a question via ‘Ask Suzanne’ and have wondered about it myself.  The question is “Has anyone figured out a way to remove the smell of Bounce from fabric? Sometimes I buy items at a yard sale or thrift store, and the smell lingers a long time, even through washing and hanging in the sun.”

It’s scary that the scent from Bounce sheets manages to linger long after multiple washes.  I was surprised when researching my article Dryer Sheets and Fabric Softener - A Household Toxin with how many chemicals these sheets contain and how unhealthy they are for your family to inhale or wear.  It is amazing when you receive hand-me-downs if the previous owner of the clothes has used Bounce sheets - you are able to detect the smell immediately.

Around the time of writing Home Made Eco Friendly Cleaning Solutions I heard about a company called Norwex and their motto appealled to me because it’s ‘Cleaning Without Chemicals’.  I am so glad I attended a Norwex product demonstration and now after getting my supplies and putting them to work in my messy house…I’m ready to report my findings.

Thank you to Aliisa who sent me the link to this edgy, fun artist. A talented mom has found a way for people to send paper cards without feelings of guilt about waste or recycling. The card is called REUSEM and they are attractive and funky. These cards are designed to be used 10 times and you simply write the date and occasion on the history chart inside, write a personal message, then the next person repeats the process…9 more times. Who doesn’t like to looky loo at other people’s thoughts or flash-back to past memorable events?

How fun would it be within your family or mom circle to send a REUSEM around?  That card would turn into a keep sake for sure!  It’s another Etsy artist who has found the perfect product to satisfy our need to send a thoughtful card, but to remember we are trying to minimize our impact to trees.  The designer is a graphic artist and the prints are amazing.  Check out her hip, new-age designs, from the ‘thank you card’ to the ‘multi occasion’ card.

With my husband’s nieces and nephews starting down the road to marriage and babies - I’ll be purchasing my REUSEM cards to remember these fun occasions and with the shipping cost being $.50, it’s cheaper than the cost of gas to drive to the store.
